Having recently written a post about the difference between spamming and marketing on Twitter I had to laugh when I was mentioned in this tweet today.
This person is obviously trying to sell watches and added my Twitter name to a tweet hoping that I would read it. And to top it off they have also asked that we ‘RT’ it! Now, I do read all my ‘mentions’, and usually respond to them, but given that all this person is trying to do is sell to me I would normally have ignored it.
I tell a lie, first I go in and try to unfollow the person. When I did that in this case I saw something interesting, hence this post. This is a screen shot from Hootsuite showing the profile of the person who sent the tweet.
This person isn’t following anyone and doesn’t have anyone following them either! So whoever it is, apart from being very spammy, has completely missed the point of social networking. If they had started following some people and tweeted some useful or interesting information first, they might have got some followers who would be interested in clicking through on a link from them at some point.
And the same goes for the asking for the tweet to be RT’d. No one is going to RT a spammy message, which this clearly is, but if someone has connected with you, shared some useful information and maybe RT’d some of your tweets, you surely would be more inclined to RT some of theirs?
And therein lies the reason that I’m mentioned in the tweet…there is no other way to get anyone’s attention in the absence of followers and useful/interesting information! I wonder if this person is also spamming people with ‘learn how I’ve made millions using Twitter’. You know the ones – they’ve only been on Twitter for two weeks, have followed 1999 people and (so far!) have 32 followers.
